Background
I began working as a photographer in Canterbury, Kent in 2009. Since 2018 I’ve focused on luxury portraiture because it allows me to put so much more into each image. Luxury portraits take time in preparation and post production as well as the photo shoot itself. The extra attention to detail is what takes a photograph from sitting on your computer and social media to hanging on your wall.
Style
Influences
My style has been strongly influenced by fine art portraiture in both painting and photography, and also by the world of high fashion and advertising. I am particularly drawn by the power of colour to alter the whole mood of an image when it’s used with subtlety.
Colour
I like to limit the palette of colours in an image to create a definite mood. On other occasions, a rainbow of colour can create a sense of stunning exuberance.
Texture
I choose evocative textures, such as lace, tulle and shiffon. In the studio, I also select textured backdrops to create a range of moods and meanings.
Emotion
Emotion, apparent or subtle, is vital. I work to find the emotion best suited to the purpose of the image. If it’s a private portrait I’m looking for something very different to images for a model’s portfolio. It’s all about attention to the slightest of expressions around the eyes and mouth and the careful arranging of the body to best convey an emotion.
